History of WHL Hockey League

The Western Hockey League was established in 1966 to promote ice hockey. The WHL Hockey league's name has been changed many times since it was formed. At first, the league was called the Western Canada Junior Hockey League (WCJHL) in 1967 and the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) in 1968.

Finally, in 1978, the league acquired its current name Western Hockey League (WHL), after adding certain American-based clubs. The WHL league had just seven clubs in its initial season, 1966-67.

The WHL Hockey League now has 22 member clubs, with 17 headquartered in Western Canada and five in the United States Pacific Northwest. The WHL's 22 teams are further split into two conferences with two divisions.

Since it became eligible to play, the Western Hockey League (WHL) has won the Memorial Cup 19 times. In addition, many WHL hockey league players have had success at other professional levels, including success in the National Hockey League.

The Edmonton Oil Kings are the most recent team to win the league, but the Kamloops Blazers have won the most championships.
