LPGA Golf

LPGA stands for Ladies Professional Golf Association, the female counterpart of the male American professional golf association. The LPGA Tour has weekly golf tournaments for elite women golfers from different countries.

LPGA is not limited to the US. Other countries also have their own LPGA clubs, but the American version is the largest and most popular across the globe.

LPGA Tours are basically in the US. The first tournament outside America happened in 1956 in Havana, Cuba. Some tournaments happen in Canada, Asia, Australia, and Europe, though it is not very common.

The major LPGA Tour tournaments are U.S. Women's Open, Chevron Championship, Women's British Open, Women's PGA Championship, and The Evian Championship, which happen annually.

The Founding and Growth of LPGA

WPGA (Women's Professional Golf Association) was founded in 1944 and is considered the predecessor of LPGA. WPGA was active from 1944 to 1948 and ceased operations in 1949.

LPGA was founded in 1950 and had thirteen founder members. The first tournament by the association was the Tampa Women's Open in the same year. The winner of the tournament was an amateur.

Fast-forward to 2001, the Women's Senior Golf Tour was started for professional women golfers aged 45 and above. This tour is now known as the Legends Tour. While it is affiliated with LPGA, it is not owned by the association.

LPGA acquired EWGA (Executive Women's Golf Association) in 2018 with a focus on adding amateur golfers to the tours. Amateur women golfers from all of North America could join this association. It was first named LPGA Women Who Play and then changed to LPGA Amateur Golf Association. The association has its presence even in the Caribbean.

LPGA on the Global Scale

It’s no surprise that the LPGA has a majority of US golfers. It took close to two decades to have a Canadian player win the tour card. Over the years, more non-US golfers qualified to bring some balance to the nationalities.

In fact, non-American golfers won more major championships between 2000 and 2009. Korean golfers became a prominent part of LPGA.

Though the total prize money fluctuated over the years, LPGA golfers played around 30 matches every year from 2004 to date. The lowest count was eighteen matches in 2020 (the Covid pandemic period).
